PFF: Finley has case as WR
Wed, 22 Feb 2012 16:06:33 PST
Indianapolis -- The March 5 deadline looms. The Packers must figure out whether or not to use the franchise tag on tight end Jermichael Finley. And as discussed, Finley may argue that he should be tagged at wide receiver money. Of course, there's a big difference.
Combine Countdown: Versatility key on line
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 21:22:56 PST
Versatility reigns on the Packers' offensive line. It's no secret Mike McCarthy prefers linemen capable of handling multiple positions. Each August, shuffling is almost expected up front. Last year, left guard was the question mark.
Packers have a free agent to-do list at combine
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 10:00:00 PST
Green Bay – The NFL scouting combine starts in Indianapolis Wednesday and while the primary purpose of the event is evaluating the health of draft prospects, it’s also a chance for the team and its prospective free agents to work toward new deals.
Eagles make sure Cullen Jenkins isn't going anywhere
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 08:01:30 PST
The Philadelphia Eagles had a financial decision to make on former Packers DT Cullen Jenkins and they showed how much they value his ability by making weeks ahead of the deadline.
Combine Countdown: RG3 is 'his own quarterback'
Sun, 19 Feb 2012 17:02:12 PST
The moment Andrew Luck decided to stay in school last year, the Stanford quarterback instantly became the crown jewel of the 2012 draft class. He’ll likely go first overall to the Indianapolis Colts — and for good reason.
Combine Countdown: VT's Wilson packs a punch
Sat, 18 Feb 2012 16:51:58 PST
In 25 years, no Virginia Tech running back put up David Wilson’s numbers in the weight room. At his position, he’s the all-time record-holder in the squat and power clean.
Feb. 17 links: Combine more than a 40 time
Fri, 17 Feb 2012 17:24:37 PST
--- Next week, the NFL Scouting Combine begins. And while much focus will be on 40 times and bench press reps, it's so much more in-depth as this National Football Post piece explains. Greg Gabriel notes that many athletes work out at the event in part to the enormous amounts of money agents spend on their clients in preparation. He says that it costs an agent up to $2,000 per week to send a prospect at a training facility to train for the Combine. Waiting until pro day can cost the agent another $4,000-$6,000. Point being, it makes fiscal sense to have a strong workout in Indy that relieves stress on a pro day. This and much more from the former Bears director of college scouting at the link above.
Other TE numbers favor Finley in contract negotiations
Fri, 17 Feb 2012 09:20:51 PST
Green Bay - The Packers have every right to use the franchise tag on TE Jermichael Finley and force him to play for the expected $5.5 million number, but if they do their chances of getting him to take part in off-season workouts and get the most out of him in 2012 will diminish greatly.
Road to Indy: Blackmon a rare talent
Fri, 17 Feb 2012 06:27:14 PST
His first spring of the job, Kasey Dunn quickly realized Justin Blackmon was wired differently. The Oklahoma State wide receivers coach took over last year at this time, this week. Here's how the game worked. A handful of captains would "draft" teams and the Cowboys held various competitive drills -- tire flips, tug of war, a sled push, obstacle courses, anything.
Feb. 16 links: Underwood signs with Raiders
Thu, 16 Feb 2012 17:03:31 PST
--- Reggie McKenzie didn't steal any of the Packers' assistant coachess as many expected, but he has taken one defensive back the team cast aside. Brandon Underwood, a sixth-round pick in 2009, has signed with the Oakland Raiders. Underwood didn't play for any team last season after getting cut by the Packers in training camp. He was beaten out at safety by the undrafted rookie M.D. Jennings. Underwood was arrested last off-season after allegedly pushing his wife and ripping her necklace off following the Packers' Super Bowl ring ceremony. He pleaded no contest to a reduced charge.
Feb. 15 links: Mario's World, RG3/Luck gap
Wed, 15 Feb 2012 07:50:15 PST
--- The Mario Williams emails continue to pour in. Sorry, gang. You're likely out of luck. Don't count on the Packers unloading a huge contract to anyone in free agency. Remember, Mike McCarthy reminded everyone at his season-ending press conference that Green Bay will continue to draft and develop. That's the formula Green Bay plans on following. Not to mention, the Packers have plenty of their own contracts to worry about down the line. Several core players will be up for extensions.
